FOODS FOR PETS WITH YEAST PROBLEMS
Note to our Customers, May 15, 2009; Effective Immediately:
NZYMES.COM is no longer recommending or endorsing pet food products from Eagle Pack, Wellness or Nature's Variety, since these 3 companies have been subject to recent changes in corporate ownership and business restructuring.
If you are an existing customer using one of these brands, this news may have an impact on your feeding program. Please understand that we are NOT suggesting an immediate disposal of any of these food brands if you currently use them; However, we are urging that you begin seeking other options through the links below.
Considerations for Choosing a Pet Food
Our recommendations center on foods considered to be Super Premium or Holistic. This means they are 'Meat-based' and meet highest quality standards, including ingredients which are more "Human-grade" instead of your typical "by-products" that are common to lower grade manufacturing. Such foods can also be expected to be devoid of harmful preservatives, additives, or harsh chemicals. These premium foods are also more likely to incorporate a higher quality 'vitamins and minerals' package designed to be more thoroughly absorbed by your pet's body.
These high-quality 'more natural' pet foods will NOT be found in supermarkets, large corporate pet stores, or discount chains. So, please use our list below and follow the Dealer Locater links to find a source close to you.
In this discussion below, Systemic Yeast Infection is abbreviated - SYI.
KNOW THE INGREDIENTS IN YOUR PET'S FOOD THE LIST OF VALID REASONS IS LENGTHY:
- Though antibiotics are commonly cited as the most prevalent cause of SYI’s, they are not the only contributor. ADDITIVES in pet foods can also be a causative factor; this includes things like preservatives, antibiotics, colorings, dyes, and even pest-prevention agents. Any or all of these can damage the delicate Flora of the gut, and may contribute toxins to the body - worsening the problem.
- Most Big-Brand-Name Supermarket pet foods are grain-based foods - loaded with starch and sugars which Candida yeast feeds and thrives on. Many prominent name foods use ground corn as the primary ingredient which has a very high sugar conversion.
- Wheat Flour or Gluten, or Corn meal, corn starch or corn Gluten along white rice and potatoes are high on glycemic index and should be avoided. (high conversion to sugar). However, sugary foods like peas, carrots or fruit are not a problem if the fall beyond the 7th ingredient.
-
These food sources continue to feed the yeast overgrowth and choke the GI tract of it's good bacteria flora. As a result the pet’s immune system gets weaker and weaker. It’s a terrible cycle!
-
Even if you have a truly premium, or better quality food, you still have to avoid the starchy carbohydrates in the first 5-6 ingredients in your food.
UNDERSTANDING THE WORD “MEAL” IN PET FOOD INGREDIENTS
In producing 'dry kibble' pet foods, water must be extracted from meat; this dried form of the meat is then referred to as “meal”. This is a highly concentrated form of meat, and contains as much as 11 times more meat protein than the wet meat. When you read “real, fresh, de-boned or whole-beef or chicken” as the first ingredient, this is a mis-stated claim! Once the meat is converted to its dry, water-free form, the specified real beef could now, by weight, be moved to the 6th or 7th on the ingredients panel. So, when chicken, beef, or pork are seen listed as first ingredient, the food is still grain based unless the meat is specifically listed as “MEAL”. The loophole here is that under pet food manufacturing guidelines, the manufacturer is allowed to weigh the contents before they are dehydrated, and the water-weight is removed.

FOODS TO AVOID WITH YEAST PROBLEMS
CONSIDERING PRIMARY OR SECONDARY FOOD ITEMS THAT MAY END UP IN THE DIET, TO PROTECT YOUR PET WITH 'SYI' YOU SHOULD:
AVOID PET FOODS OR TREATS THAT CONTAIN: Meat-by-products, poultry-by-products, sausage, bacon, corn beef, lunch meats, smoked turkey, ham, sauces or gravies.
AVOID THESE TREATS: Milk Bones, Bonz, Beggin Strips, Snausages, Jerky Treats, Greenies, rawhides, pig ears and others. Look closely at ingredients.
AVOID THESE GRAINS: Enriched flour, wheat, wheat gluten, white rice*, rice flour*, corn meal, corn gluten, millet, prepackaged breads, cereals, cookies, crackers, pretzels and pasta. (*White rice may be ok if properly balanced in a quality food with brown rice or ricebran)
AVOID THESE WHOLE VEGETABLES: Corn, peas, carrots, potatoes, onions, sweet potatoes, yams, etc. (amounts of these vegetables used in holistic pet foods are very small and will not be problematic).
AVOID DAIRY PRODUCTS LIKE: Buttermilk, cheeses and cottage cheese.
AVOID ANYTHING SWEET: Sugar, sorbitol, caramel coloring, honey, molasses, maple syrup, corn syrup or Dextrose.
AVOID PRODUCTS LIKE: Peanuts or Vitamin or Mineral supplements made from yeast sources.
WHEN CHOOSING PREMIUM DRY FOOD: The first 5 ingredients should NOT include - potatoes, white rice (brewers), corn products, wheat products, carrots, or peas. |
OTHER DIET PROGRAM RECOMMENDATIONS
ADVISE EVERYONE ABOUT YOUR PETS' RESTRICTED DIET Make sure that ALL family members, neighbors, utility company employees and Postal workers are aware that your pet is on a RESTRICTED DIET and that it is NOT OK to give treats or any of the problem foods.
USE FILTERED WATER If possible, use filtered water for your pet. Chlorine used in city water will contribute to the breakdown of the GI tract’s natural Flora, making it more difficult to resolve yeast issues. Therefore, we suggest examining options to provide your pet either filtered water or bottled water. Two economical options would be - 1) an inexpensive Brita filter pitcher for your counter; 2) bottled water by the gallon or 2.5 gallons is quite inexpensive and will greatly help to protect your pet from further Flora damage - now and future. Dogs (especially) tend to drink lots of water in warmer months of the year - sometimes drinking for minutes at a time - and if that water is chlorinated, it can reak havoc on digestive Flora. |
