WHAT RESULTS SHOULD I EXPECT USING THE NZYMES PROGRAM TO BATTLE THE YEAST PROBLEM?
THOUGH RESOLUTION IS EXPECTED IN EVERY CASE, THE 2-PART CLEANSING PROCESS IS A SLOW ONE! For Part-1, the initial Cleansing, the time to expect for overall improvement averages 3 to 7 months OR approximately 1 month for every year of the pets' age, and possibly longer for those pets with a history of medication usage, including the use of antibiotics, steroids and antihistamines. However, puppies still undergoing vaccination protocols have been known to take longer to process through cleansing. Part-1 Cleansing is assumed finished when your pets seems clear of symtoms for the most part. Part-2 requires an additional 6 months or more to finish clearing yeast and rebalancing the GI tract. Keeping the problem from returning is the job of the Recommended maintenance.
NOTE: Heat is a huge factor! The heat of summer + furnace use in winter are normally significant activators, as the result of increased heat on the body can cause increased rates of yeast toxins rising to the surface.
The symptoms, including itchiness and inflammation, often appear to worsen during the first 2-3 months of the program; this may begin within 1-3 weeks of program start. This is due to detoxification activity known as the Herxheimer effect. The process of cleansing Candida toxins can also produce flu-like symptoms, nausea, loose stools and diarrhea, or even lethargy problems in beginning stages.
Make sure to keep an eye on your pet’s general health and temperature. And you should make every effort to prevent them from chewing themselves to bleeding if possible; refer to the main instructions for suggestions on how to ease itching (Listerine or baking-sode paste). DO NOT AVOID treatment by your Vet for secondary bacterial infections that can result from a pet scratching or chewing themselves.
WHAT IS A YEAST INFECTION (SYI)?
Before plunging into our nutritional program for yeast problems, you should have a basic understanding of the subject. Simply put, there are about 500 different known microorganisms residing in the digestive tract. Some are beneficial and some are not. These bacterial 'colonies' form a protective 'lining' for intestinal tissue - making up what is known as the "Flora", which is also necessary to maintain proper digestion and to help build immunities for good health.
In a healthy pet (or person), the large intestine hosts a balance of beneficial bacteria, including Lactobacillus acidophilus and Lactobacillus bifidus, along with potentially harmful Candida (fungus and pathogen). Candida is usually kept "in check" by the Lactobacillus bacteria, partially by the production of lactic acid. Candida actually provides growth factors for Lactobacillus. All these (and others) exist in a natural balance (making up the Flora), until something happens to upset that balance.
WHEN THE pH BALANCE IS UPSET... (Example indications in pets may include: hot spots, rashes under the arms, uncontrollable itching, reoccurring ear or urinary infections, repeated staph infections, skin blackening, acne problems, etc.)
Although there is no "single factor" responsible for turning this naturally occurring organism into an agent of disease, the candidal species is notorious for being an "opportunistic" pathogen: "Candida incite disease in hosts whose immune system (local or systemic) has been impaired, damaged, or is innately dysfunctional". Underlying causes that weaken the immune system and therefore make your pet more susceptible to yeast problems include - cancer, hypothyroidism, and chronic use of antibiotics or cortisone.
Candida has a tenacious ability to adhere to mucosal surfaces. This is a necessary step for the initiation of candidiasis, and adherence depends on the immune status of the host. Candida secretes enzymes which destroy membrane integrity, leading to dysfunction. Candida also secretes toxins which activate the immune system, overload the liver, and then deposit themselves in body tissues. Once within body tissues, these toxins will work their way to skin surfaces, as the skin is one of the primary pathways the body has for disposal of toxins. Unfortunately, the presence of toxins within skin or ear tissues is what triggers the immune system to respond - with inflammation, which will (in turn) result in itching (much like a mosquito bite?). This 'response' is what the vet will see and then be led down the path to assuming "allergies" are at fault, as toxins within the skin cannot be readily detected.
There are 3 types of YEAST infections:
- Superficial (most common) - characterized by inflammation of tissue linings, i.e. skin, GI tract, pharynx, upper and lower respiratory tract etc.;
- Locally invasive - i.e. pneumonia, cystitis, esophagitis, the most common being ulcerations of the intestinal, respiratory or genito-urinary tract;
- Systemic - an invasive infection, characterized by lesions of the heart, kidneys, liver, spleen, lung, brain and other organs.
There are several things to consider WITH candidiasis:
- The inflammatory response must be treated.
- Lactobacillus count needs to be increased in order to help rebalance the GI tract and keep Candida in check.
- The immune system needs strengthening, which decreases adherence ability.
- Antibiotics, steroids, and other immune-suppressing drugs, along with simple carbohydrate foods, should be avoided.
- Digestive secretions should be increased.
-
Nutrient deficiencies should be reversed;
-
Liver function should be optimized to increase ability to filter toxins.
The friendly bacteria that are attached to the inner intestinal walls are benign and do not harm us. They don’t make harmful chemicals or provoke immune responses and inflammation. These microorganisms actually protect us from the adherence of disease causing bacteria, like Salmonella and Shigella, which cause diarrhea.
When antibiotics are given for an infection, they not only kill bad bacteria that contribute to the infection, but can also damage or strip away beneficial (benign) colonies of bacteria in a normally healthy gut. Candida, as a 'fungus', is unaffected by the antibiotics and readily moves-in and takes over bare and unprotected tissues as the good guys die off. As the yeast (Candida) invades new territory, it entrenches itself, and will continue its relentless advance as long as it remains unopposed.
We all know the importance of antibiotics for a serious infection. However, the unfortunate side-effect of antibiotics is that they can also break-down or damage the ‘good guy’ bacteria colonies, resulting in Gastro-Intestinal imbalance. Sadly, antibiotics are often part of many of the popular pet foods being sold today.
The disruption if the intestinal balance is where the troubles begin. With the walls unprotected by the beneficial Flora, conditions are ripe for the inflammatory Leaky Gut Syndrome and then Systemic Yeast. The Candida yeast goes through cycles of overgrowth, where toxins are released throughout the system causing any number of various symptoms ( see symptoms list). Candida makes a variety of toxic chemicals, which are destructive to 'friendly' bacteria. The making of these chemicals prevents bacteria from coming back and enables the yeast to stay after antibiotics are given. These chemicals include toxic alcohol, acetone and the nerve poison hydrogen sulfide. These chemicals are very sedating, slow down the brain and may cause chronic fatigue.
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?
Candida symptoms are often diagnosed as “ ALLERGIES” and commonly seen as rashes and skin outbreaks in the paws, face/muzzle, ears, under arms, underbelly or genital areas. Other symptoms include recurring ear infections, eye infections, and bladder or urinary tract infections.
In yet other ways, the yeast toxins can cause fatigue, lethargy, immobility, joint pain and discomfort. The animals will experience severe itching, which leads to endless biting, chewing and hair loss. Symptoms may include skin problems like blackening, dry flaky skin or a greasy grit on the skin. As the condition worsens over time, a bad yeasty smell or odor is very likely.

Yeast Candida is very evasive and resistant of the body’s immune system. The immune system will generate inflammation as a defensive wall against the yeast. Normally this painful inflammation resolves an infection, but Candida resists the immune system, partly by changing its appearance and evading the immune system. As the immune cells circulate and find yeast in other places, such as the skin, they instigate inflammation at those areas. Repeatedly, the the immune system has difficulty clearing the Candida, and the inflammation persists, leading to chronic inflammation on the skin. There are many names for such skin inflammation, on both humans and dogs, including eczema and psoriasis. In the intestinal tract, such persistent inflammation can develop into Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.

Some of these animals may exhibit pimple-like dermatitis where the skin may be wet with pus that progresses through self-chewing or scratching resulting in pyoderma or Seborrhea, a Dry type - similar to heavy dandruff; or, maybe a Greasy type - yellow brown greasy scales that adhere to hair shafts, accompanied by rancid odor.
Another example would be that of a Lick granuloma (acral pruritic dermatitis): Red, shiny skin ulcer caused by continuous licking at wrist or ankle or foot. This is usually seen to occur in large, short-coated breeds of dogs.

PART 1 - Cleanse Toxins and Support the Immune System
USE EITHER - NZYMES® TREATS or GRANULES, DAILY
Each day your pet will need to take our NZYMES® Treats or Granules. They provide vital ‘live food’ dietary enzymes, which are completely missing in all cooked and processed pet foods. These key enzymes provide the mechanisms to help the body produce powerful antioxidant enzymes which, in combating SYI, play a vital role by helping the body to flush out the dying candida yeast toxins, as well as free radicals (at the cellular level). The enzyme increase can also help boost the immune system, reduce inflammation, and speed the healing process (enhances coat and skin too).
NOTE: DOUBLE THE DAILY USAGE OF TREATS OR GRANULES FOR THE FIRST 60 DAYS. This is done as part of the initial cleansing process. NOTE: Latest instuctions direct to WAIT 1-week before starting this 60-day doubling period. Assuming some progress during those 60 days, doubling should no longer be needed, and you can return to regular daily 'maintenance' usage after that.
PART 2 - Combat the Yeast Candida Fungus
NZYMES® Ox-E-Drops has effective antibacterial, anti-fungal, anti-viral qualities AND can be used both internally and topically to battle the CANDIDA YEAST FUNGUS. It can also help to reduce skin itch on a temporary basis - by destroying elements coming to the surface.
USING Ox-E-Drops INTERNALLY:
(Mix with water and add to food) NOTE: Ox-E-Drops are highly alkaline (13 pH), so they must be diluted with water for internal and topical use.
The internal usage recommendation is "1 drop per 20 pounds" of body weight given twice daily, but the MINIMUM to use is 2-drops for even the smallest pets. But, these drops must always be DILUTED; using a teaspoon of water, add the correct number of drops and then mix that with something edible, OR deliver directly to mouth - using a small syringe or dropper. It is a good practice to add a few drops to the water dish to protect against other bacteria; this can also help freshen breath when drinking occurs.
If you add RAW APPLE CIDER VINEGAR to the water dish as outlined below, DO NOT add the Ox-E-Drops to the water dish. These two products cancel each other out. (one being alkaline, the other acid based). See "Helpful Suggestions" below.
(WARNING: Keep the concentrated Ox-E product away from children and pets)
USING Ox-E-Drops TOPICALLY:
(Applying the 2% solution to the affected areas a minimum of 2 to 3 times daily - Better if 4 to 5 times daily)
It is also important to use the Ox-E-Drops topically, using a 2% topical solution, which can be prepared by adding 1 teaspoon of Ox-E-Drops to 8 oz. of distilled water (80 drops per 1 cup, or 10 drops per ounce).
This mixture is best applied with an 8 oz. spray bottle or a soaked cotton ball. Apply to the affected areas a minimum of 2 to 3 times a day. This works much like an antiseptic, speeding up the healing process of the skin, and attacks the topical fungus growth, while also helping to destroy bacteria attracted to affected areas from the environment. It may also help to reduce itching temporarily.
For Pet's Ears; saturate a cotton ball with the 2% solution and thoroughly clean out buildup, then rinse the inside of the ears 2-3 times daily for the first 4-5 days; then once or twice weekly thereafter to maintain.
B: USE NZYMES® Tincture of Black-Leaf (TWICE DAILY)

NZYMES® Tincture of Black-Leaf is a very potent antibacterial, anti-fungal, anti-viral and anti-parasitic HERBAL tincture combining Olive Leaf with Black Walnut. Black-Leaf's own anti-fungal powers help provide an extra boost to aid the yeast cleansing and healing process; this will often shorten the time it takes to get the situation under control. Therefore, combined usage of the Black-Leaf and Ox-E-Drops products provides maximum power for combating the yeast where needed, both internally and topically.
USING BLACK-LEAF INTERNALLY (Follow the Directions on the bottle)
USING BLACK-LEAF TOPICALLY - Mix the Black-Leaf concentrate with distilled water (1 part Black-Leaf to 3 parts water and apply mixture to the affected area).
Black-Leaf Product Information Page
PART 3 - Re-Establish Good Bacteria; Crowd out Yeast
This NZYMES® BacPak Plus is a powerful blend of digestive enzymes and Probiotics (good guy microorganisms). Under normal conditions, these are essential to digestion - for the breakdown and then uptake of nutrients to the body. When combating an SYI, BacPak Plus completes the 3rd crucial step in the process. While the Ox-E-Drops, Black-Leaf, and NZYMES® Treats or Granules are battling and flushing out Candida yeast toxins, the 4th product of the kit, BacPak Plus, gets busy delivering literally billions of 'friendly' bacteria to the system - to help repair the gut (and reverse damage that started the whole problem). It is critical to reestablish these good bacteria colonies so that the body can gain back the lost territory given up to Candida yeast.
USING BACPAK PLUS We recommend to WAIT until beginning of 4 Week before beginning to use the NZYMES® BacPak Plus with the other products in the Yeast Kit. At that point follow the usage directions on the bottle and add the BacPak Plus to your pets foods twice daily.
We have found that waiting helps reduce the severity of the cleansing symptoms often seen at about 3 weeks into the program.
A 1-gram measuring scoop is included inside the bottle.

PART 4 - Feed Correct Quality Foods; Don't Feed the Yeast
This FOURTH STEP in our program is among the most important - Changing the food! Keep this in mind: if you continue to feed inappropriate foods or treats - that contribute to growth of the Candida, the net effect will be much like - "trying to wash your car while someone sprays mud on it! You'll likely get very frustrated".
Here are some considerations for choosing a good pet food when battling YEAST:
The recommendations center on foods considered Super Premium or Holistic. These foods are 'Meat-based' and made using high quality, Human-grade ingredients; they are also devoid of harsh chemicals and additives, as well as 'by products'. These premium 'more natural' foods are also more likely to benefit from a quality 'vitamins and minerals' package designed to be more thoroughly absorbed by your pet's body. Such foods will NOT be found in supermarkets, large corporate pet stores, or Discount chains. You can usually only find such quality pet foods in local smaller pet stores within your community. Use the listing below (ordered by preference) to help find such a store within reasonable distance from you.
WHY DO I NEED TO CHANGE FOOD?
Although antibiotics are commonly cited as the cause of SYI’s, they are not the only contributor. By far, the vast majority of pet foods are comprised of poor quality ingredients, preservatives, and are completely devoid of ‘living materials’ (needed for the good guys); but, they are usually chock-full of starches, grains and carbohydrates. These 'high glycemic' elements (in converting to sugar too quickly) will seriously contribute to daily growth of the Candida fungus. Many pet foods even contain remnants of antibiotics. And, most are grain-based (corn or wheat), not meat-based.
Reiterating, the big problem with the majority of grain-based foods is the starch and sugars; these are the items which Candida yeast will feed and thrive on, while the Nzymes program is trying to destroy the yeast. These food sources will continue to choke the GI tract and stifle the building of immunities by the good bacteria flora. As a result the pet’s immune system gets weaker and weaker. It’s a terrible cycle!
WHAT DOES “MEAL” MEAN?
After water has been extracted from meat, it is now in a dry form and can then be referred to using “meal”. As such, this is now a highly concentrated form of meat, and typically contains 11 times more meat protein (by weight) than wet meat. When a brand claims “real, fresh, de-boned or whole beef or chicken” as the first ingredient, it usually is NOT! Once in its dry, undiluted form, such meat should truly be listed as maybe the 6th or 7th ingredient in the list. So, even though chicken, beef, or lamb may be listed as the first ingredient, the food is still truly grain based since the meat is not listed as “MEAL”. The loophole here is that under pet food manufacturing guidelines, the manufacturer is allowed to weigh the contents before they are dehydrated, where the water-weight is removed.
SHOULDN'T I FEED ONE OF THE NEW 'GRAIN-FREE' DIETS?
THESE FOODS ARE NOT RECOMMENDED, BECAUSE...
The Pitch - 'Grain-Free' pet foods have been becoming more and more popular over the last few years. It is the newest "niche" in the industry, but you should recognize it for what it is - the latest sales-boosting technique. Pet food companies are clamoring to produce their own versions of grain-free diets in order to 'cash in' on the current wave of popularity. Many times these foods are touted as the answer to pet "allergies", stating that symptoms arise from the grains in the foods. They declare that pets were not meant to have grains as part of their diets, so go "Grain-Free" and get back to nature. HOWEVER, since all pet foods must have a carbohydrate source, these foods incorporate non-grain carbs like Potato, Sweet Potato, or Tapioca.
The Problem - Part of this Pitch is true. The vast majority of pet foods sold in this and other countries are grain based. This means that the primary ingredient is grain, usually a cheap, abundant, low-quality grade of corn. But, corn is very starchy, and when combined with harsh preservatives, additives, by-products, etc, is a big reason why this issue is such a prevalent problem in pets these days. These foods consist of about 70-80% grain and are not ideal for pets under any circumstances.
Here's Where We Differ - We know that most "allergies" suffered by pets are not really allergies at all, but rather stem from the internal overgrowth of yeast in the GI Tract. Yeast is fed by Sugar and Starches, whether that source is derived from grains or non-grains. Simple starches like Potato, Sweet Potato, and Tapioca convert to sugar more rapidly and aggravate a Yeast issue. More complex carbohydrate sources like Brown Rice, Barley and Oatmeal, albeit grains, convert to sugar more slowly, and are an ideal carb source for an Anti-Yeast diet
Our Pledge - You'll note that none of the foods that we have recommended for yeast are of the 'Grain-free' variety. We have yet to find a customer, who has resolved a yeast issue using one of these foods. Yet we have had 10's of thousands happily resolve their pets yeast condition using the foods we recommend. If there was a grain-free food that would really work, we would be the first to recommend it.
Note to our customers, May 15, 2009; effective immediately:
NZYMES.COM is no longer recommending or endorsing products from Eagle Pack, Wellness or Nature's Variety, since these 3 companies have recently been subject to changes in corporate ownership and business restructuring.

OTHER DIET PROGRAM RECOMMENDATIONS
NOTIFY EVERYONE THAT YOU PET IS ON A RESTRICTED DIET Make sure that ALL family members, neighbors, utility company employees and Postal workers are aware that your pet is on a RESTRICTED DIET and that it is NOT OK to give treats or any of the problem foods.
USE FILTERED WATER If possible use filtered water for your pet. Chlorine used in city water does contribute to the breakdown of the GI tract’s natural flora making it more difficult to resolve yeast issues. Therefore we suggest purchasing a system for you tap that filters chlorine and other harmful agents out of the pet’s water. |
HELPFUL SUGGESTIONS - for itchy skin or smell!
Give frequent baths ( TWICE A WEEK) using medicated shampoos to clear the skin of dead and dying mater ials and help reduce itching and odor. The hardest part of this entire process is to try to reduce discomfort for your suffering pet whenever and however possible. That is why the information here is quite important to you.
We understand that bathing a pet twice weekly can be very difficult at best. To make your life a little easier we suggest using the a pet bath that gets you off the floor in the bathroom and up on you feet. Truly, these makes bathing your pet much easier! Click here to learn more. Booster Bath
Shampoos We Recommend
We recommend you choose one of the following medicated shampoos:
UNIVERSAL MEDICATED Shampoo - by Vet Solutions (in Canada it is called Canadian Medicated Shampoo) Search product names online for best pricing.
MALASEB Shampoo; the Spray or Pledget wipes 'may' assist with itch - by DVM. MICRO-TEK Medicated Shampoo - by EQyss
Search ONLINE for product names (for best pricing), or check with your Vet.
It has been suggested that - for the best relief of the itching - you should allow the medicated shampoo suds to remain on the pet's body for 10-15 minutes after bathing before you do the FINAL RINSE with Baking Soda and water. This has shown to be the most effective way to help soothe the itching - for as much as 1 to 3 days.
OTHER TOPICAL PRODUCTS
LISTERINE (Original/Gold) - Use full strength and apply liberally with a sponge or spray bottle on itchy and skin-rash areas. It may sting on open lesions or the more severe areas as it contains alcohol. This method has been reported to give noticeable relief from the itchiness by a majority of those having tried it. Many customers have reported that their pets were able to sleep through the night after use.
EQYSS PRODUCTSMega-Tek Coat Rebuilder - This product is like a conditioner. Just squeeze out a good amount and rub it onto the areas that are rashy and itchy and let it dry.
Use the Micro-Tek Spray - This also has seen results at times.
Stop them from Chewing and Scratching
YOU CANNOT ALLOW THE PET TO CONTINUE CHEWING AND SCRATCHING!
Get an Soft Elizabethan collar and put it around the dog or cat's neck to keep them from chewing at the itchy inflamed areas. The hard plastic elizabethan collars can cause stress for pets and owners. Dogs and cats become depressed when wearing a hard-plastic cone. They bang into walls and are generally disoriented. Pets can carry out normal activity with the soft collar.

Comfy Cone - Provides a cone that can be folded when needed to let dogs & cats eat, etc.
- Has elastic loops to thread the pets own collar through to keep the Comfy Collar secure in place and keeping it from being pulled off or from falling off.

Option 2: PREPARING A BAKING SODA RINSE and TOPICAL SPRAY
Using a final rinse of BAKING SODA AND WATER for the pets body after shampooing can be very effective to reduce the overall itchiness and smell. Mix two (2-4) teaspoons of BAKING SODA per gallon of water; make sure to mix it so it completely dissolves.
SPRAY BOTTLEMix one (1-2) heaping teaspoons of BAKING SODA with 8 oz. of water. Use this with a spray bottle or cotton ball for the itchy rashes areas. Reports show that it is quite helpful with the overall itchiness, skin problems and inflammation. Soaking a cloth with this baking soda solution and leaving it on the more severely affected areas can be helpful to soothe the skin and reduce inflammation.
MAKING A TOPICAL PASTE Mix one (1) teaspoons of BAKING SODA with a little water and add 8-10 drops of the Tincture of BlackLeaf. Rub the paste directly into the itchy rashes areas. Reports state that the pets will have 4 to 12 hours of relief from the itchiness in that area.
YOU NEED TO BE PATIENT. This Program Takes Time!
YEAST CLEANSING IS A SLOW PROCESS! The time for overall VISIBLE improvement averages 3 to 7 months. This timing (in most cases) should clear the observable symptoms; HOWEVER, at this point - it can easily take an equal amount of time to complete the INTERNAL healing process, and result in a well pet! Completing this is what we refer to as 'Sealing the Cavity'; in other words, beneficial bacteria colonies have re-gained control of intestinal tissues and most Yeast has been removed from these tissues. Medical research shows that you may never clear all the yeast from the system; this, along with relapses we see, accounts for our recommendation for continuing with our maintenance program.
Also, the cleansing process will surely take longer for pets that have been suffering longer - possibly a month or more for each year the illness has affected the pet. Then, you can expect increased time where there is a history of medication usage - including the use of antibiotics, steroids and antihistamines. Keep in mind that vaccinations, being one of the causative factors for such illness, can also increase the timing, OR actually regress progress. So, deferring any vaccination schedules is a good idea where possible.
NOTE: Heat (SUMMER and furnace's in WINTER) is the most significant activator as it pushes the yeast toxins to the surface.
The symptoms, including itchiness and inflammation, often appear to worsen during the initial 2 months of the program, usually beginning at about 3-4 weeks. This Herxheimer effect of the body detoxifying often lasts for an extended period (2-3 months). The process of cleansing Candida can produce flu-like symptoms, nausea, loose stools and diarrhea in the beginning and the pet may appear lethargic.
Make sure to keep an eye on your pet’s general health and temperature and certainly please don't allow them to chew themselves to bleeding if possible. DON’T AVOID treatment by your Vet for secondary bacterial infections that are a result of pet scratching or chewing themselves
