Pet Food Recall Reaches California Hog Farm
The California Department of Food and Agriculture report that a state-licensed custom slaughterer has been impacted by the most recent recall of melamine-tainted pet food. American Hog Farm, Ceres, Calif., feeds salvaged pet food to its 1,500 hogs. About 100 hogs may have been impacted between the dates in question (April 3 to April 18). AHF does only custom slaughter, and does not sell via retail. However, it does ship extra hogs to some federally inspected plants, and three such facilities were impacted. CDFA officials have seized hogs and carcasses. They are continuing to track and notifying the various entities' customers.
Melamine's impact on animals or humans is not well known because it is not meant to be ingested. California's Public Health officials believe the risk to humans to be minimal. For more, search hog farm recall.
