FOODS FOR PETS WITH CANDIDA-YEAST PROBLEMS
Considerations for Choosing a Pet Food
Our recommendations center around foods considered to be Super Premium or Holistic. This means they are 'Meat-based' and meet the highest quality standards in the industry, including ingredients which are more "Human-grade" instead of your typical "by-products" that are common to lower grade manufacturing. Also, you can expect such foods to be devoid of harmful
preservatives, additives, and harsh chemicals. Last but not least, these premium foods are also more likely to incorporate a higher quality 'vitamin and mineral' package designed to be more thoroughly absorbed by your pet's body. These high-quality 'more natural' pet foods will NOT be found in supermarkets, large corporate pet stores, or discount chains. So, please use our list below and follow the Dealer Locater links to find a source close to you. In this discussion below, Systemic Yeast Infection is abbreviated - SYI.
KNOW THE INGREDIENTS IN YOUR PET'S FOOD
THE LIST OF VALID REASONS IS LENGTHY:
INGREDIENTS CONSIDERATIONS: ALL the foods included in this listing meet NZYMES stringent guidelines for NOT containing the High-Glycemic items - in the top 5 of Ingredients list - that can 'work against you' when trying to solve a Candida Yeast overgrowth problem with your pet. Those items would be: potato, sweet potato, corn products, wheat products, white rice (brewers), tapioca, and carrots. There may be minor exceptions where white rice may be listed - and the exception is made because the maker has balanced the glycemic index with other ingredients. FOODS OK TO USE WITH YEAST PROBLEMS
MEATS & PROTEIN SOURCES OK TO USE: Beef, Buffalo, Duck, Chicken (eggs), Fish, Rabbit, Turkey, Cornish Hen, Lamb, Eggs. (No RAW Northwest Pacific Salmon or Steelhead).
VEGETABLES OK TO USE: Asparagus, Broccoli, Brussel Sprouts, Cauliflower, Celery, Collard, Cucumbers, Eggplant, Green Beans, Kale, Lettuce, Parsley, Spinach, Squash, Yellow Beans.
**TREATS OK TO USE: Try to use treats that are MEAT-BASED ONLY, with no wheat (especially wheat gluten), isolated white rice (brewers rice), potatoes or corn meal. For dogs doing battle with a Systemic Yeast Infection (SYI), here are some safe options for healthy treats:
YOGURT PRODUCTS: Use plain yogurt only - NO SUGAR ADDED!
Adding the NZYMES supplements to plain Yogurt can serve as an effective method of feeding the supplements to the more finicky pets. |
FOODS TO AVOID WITH YEAST PROBLEMS
CONSIDERING PRIMARY OR SECONDARY FOOD ITEMS THAT MAY END UP IN THE DIET, TO PROTECT YOUR PET WITH 'SYI' YOU SHOULD:
AVOID PET FOODS OR TREATS THAT CONTAIN: Meat-by-products, poultry-by-products, Tapioca, sausage, bacon, corn beef, lunch meats, smoked turkey, ham, sauces or gravies.
AVOID THESE TREATS: Milk Bones, Bonz, Beggin Strips, Snausages, Jerky Treats, Greenies, rawhides, pig ears and others. Look closely at ingredients.
AVOID THESE GRAINS: Enriched flour, wheat, wheat gluten, white rice*, brewers rice, rice flour*, corn meal, corn gluten, millet, prepackaged breads, cereals, cookies, crackers, pretzels and pasta. (*White rice may be ok if properly balanced in a quality food with brown rice or ricebran)
AVOID THESE WHOLE VEGETABLES: Corn, potatoes, onions, sweet potatoes, Carrots, yams, etc. (amounts of these vegetables used in holistic pet foods are very small and will not be problematic).
AVOID DAIRY PRODUCTS LIKE: Buttermilk, cheeses and cottage cheese.
AVOID ANYTHING SWEET: Sugar, sorbitol, caramel coloring, honey, molasses, maple syrup, corn syrup or Dextrose.
AVOID PRODUCTS LIKE: Peanuts.
WHEN CHOOSING PREMIUM DRY FOOD: The first 7 ingredients should NOT include - potatoes, sweet potato, white rice (brewers), corn products, or wheat products. |
OTHER DIET PROGRAM RECOMMENDATIONS
ADVISE EVERYONE ABOUT YOUR PETS' RESTRICTED DIET Make sure that ALL family members, neighbors, utility company employees and Postal workers are aware that your pet is on a RESTRICTED DIET and that it is NOT OK to give treats or any of the problem foods.
USE FILTERED WATER If possible, use filtered water for your pet. Chlorine used in city water will contribute to the breakdown of the GI tract’s natural Flora, making it more difficult to resolve yeast issues. Therefore, we suggest examining options to provide your pet either filtered water or bottled water. Two economical options would be - 1) an inexpensive Brita filter pitcher for your counter; 2) bottled water by the gallon or 2.5 gallons is quite inexpensive and will greatly help to protect your pet from further Flora damage - now and future. Dogs (especially) tend to drink lots of water in warmer months of the year - sometimes drinking for minutes at a time - and if that water is chlorinated, it can reak havoc on digestive Flora.

Understanding the word “MEAL” in pet food ingredients:
Per explanation by one of the better Pet Food Manufacturers: “MEAT MEAL” is highly concentrated meat that is 'dehydrated', and thereby contains 5% moisture and 70% protein. Whereas, normal 'wet' Meat is about 70% water and about 12% protein. So, when 'normal meat' is processed, most of that weight is lost, which makes the meat - by weight - way down the list of ingredients, and you end up with a food that is NOT meat based, and likely "grain based" - with very low protein.
As an example, seeing 'Chicken Meal' listed is GOOD, whereas a listing of 'Chicken' or 'De-boned chicken' is fooling people into thinking the food "meat based".
