Vestibular Syndrome
Within each of us, and dogs and cats too, a neurological mechanism exists, called the “Vestibular Apparatus”. This mechanism is responsible for helping us to orient ourselves in the world in which we live. Literally, it helps us know ‘which way is up'. There are two sets of receptors in the inner ear. One set helps us determine UP and DOWN, the other set helps us to determine SIDE to SIDE motion. These receptors connect to the hypothalamus, an area of the brain that helps us determine our positioning. This internal mechanism sends signals to the muscles in our neck, legs and eyes so that we may constantly make minute adjustments to right ourselves in our surroundings.
Vestibular Syndrome occurs when there is a disorder with this mechanism. Symptoms include:
- Stumbling
- Staggering
- Lack of coordination
- Circling
- Tilting of the head
- Rotational eye movement
- Falling to one side
- General loss of balance
Most instances of Vestibular Syndrome are Idiopathic, meaning there is no certainty of its origin. It comes on abruptly, and leaves abruptly. The problem can stem from either end of the receptors mentioned above. It has been noted that pets with a history of ear infections, or with a current ear infection, are a likely cause of symptoms. Thankfully, the condition seems to correct itself in a short time. Pets often show improvement within 3 days and are usually back to normal in 1-2 weeks. If symptoms persist, it is best to have your pet evaluated by a Veterinarian.
