Constipation Concerns in Dogs or Cats
If you notice your pet is not having many bowel movements if any at all, or you notice he is straining when defecating, it may be safe to assume he is constipated. Constipation can occur for various reasons. As in humans, animals need plenty of fiber in their diet to stay regular. Many of today's popular pet foods are lacking in insoluble fiber, not to mention any “live food” enzymes to assist in the digestive process. The addition of a little oat bran (soak with water first) or pumpkin to the diet can have a positive effect in these cases.
Dehydration can be responsible for many cases of constipation. Many pets simply do not drink enough water. This is especially true in cats. In these cases, it may be necessary to include more wet food into the diet, or even to soak your pet's food with water before feeding. Some medications have a dehydrating effect on the bowels. As with any medication, discuss side-effects with your vet.
Other causes of constipation may include inactivity. Just like people, pets need plenty of physical activity and exercise. Active pets should have 1-2 bowel movements daily. Dogs that are left home alone for long periods of time may override their urge to empty the bowels so as not to have an “accident” in the house. This action may lead to impaction of the colon. A gentle laxative such as milk, or milk of magnesia, can help to draw more water into the intestine, and relieve the problem.
Sometimes the constipation is caused by eating large amounts of inappropriate materials like grass, paper, bone chips or cloth. In these circumstances you should always consult your veterinarian to be sure the problem has not escalated to a more severe health issue such as fecal impaction.
Help for Constipation
As with any digestive issue, supplementation of DIGESTIVE enzymes can greatly aid the digestive process, which would call for a superior digestive-enzymes/Microbial product like the NZYMES Bac~Pak Plus
. And, as a daily supplement, the Microbial or 'probiotic' content of the product will suffice to help rebuild damaged 'friendly bacteria' colonies and KEEP them strong to protect not only immune function, but also protect against the most serious and devastating of pet conditions - that being Candida Yeast
To aid from a different vantage point, the "live food" properties of the Antioxidant Treats or Granules can assist the body's own metabolic activity and production of digestive enzymes. They can also assist in the removal of dangerous toxins and free-radicals.
